Photography: Diana Arbus

We had our first photography class last Friday and our lecturer was showing us some of the big names in photography. One of them stood strong in my mind- Diana Arbus.

We always wanna take photos of pretty things, people and memories. But for her, she took photos of those people outcasted from the society... People whom we considered was ugly. And yes she sparked controversy at that period of time (60s-70s)

How do you feel after seeing these photos? I got a rush of guilt when I saw these. I felt really disappointed that my definition of beauty is so materialistic. Arbus' photos show the world what we shun from. She showed us, these people are beautiful to be photographed too, to be treated as fairly as everyone else.

And for this, I salute her.

RIP Diana Arbus.
